Christ over Sheffield

I visited Sheffield last weekend and dropped into the cathedral to see what art they held.

Just as you walk in the main door, look left and you will see this striking crucifixion scene.

Not an unusual image for a cathedral but, look a little closer. Instead of the hills of Golgotha, this Christ is above the terraced streets and industrial landscape of post-war Sheffield.

Painted by Sheffield artist, David Hepher; this was a gift from the artist back in 2018.

It really is a stunner. The lines drawing you to the vanishing point then shoot upwards with the high-rise and factories in the background.

The viewpoint is almost voyeuristic as you look down into the yards of the terraces where the washing lines are loaded with the laundry day sheets and shirts.

The astonishing view is of the people and cars in the street, going about the daily business while the son of God breathes his last above the city.

If you are ever in Sheffield, do pay this a visit- well worth it!
