The end is nigh!

Took my new car out for a spin and ended up at Compton Verney in Warwickshire.  Whilst there, I came across a wonderful depiction of Limbo by Pieter Huys.  Huys was a follower of Bosch and this painting led me to take a look at two works that I think are exquisitely grotesque -an oxymoron, if ever there was one.

The Huys painting is wonderfully detailed with small vignettes of what to expect as you wait for the bus to heaven or hell!

The tortures the unbaptised and the sinful face are terrifying and as you look around the scene, it becomes increasingly chilling.  It begs the question, how many ways can you inflict pain?

It reminded me of Breugel’s Triumph of Death in terms of chaos. Absolutely love this one and would dearly like to pay this a visit at The Prado.
